Coal Processing
Enviroplus Design has some 30 years experience in the coal mining industry. Our involvement ranges from designing a number of coal plants, both large and small, to examination and in some cases up-rating and upgrading existing plants. We have also modified existing plants for applications different to those for which the plant was built.
Our overall strategic objective is to build safe, efficient and more importantly, cost-effective plants.
Review of Existing Plants
Enviroplus has undertaken Competent Person`s reports for Sasol, Exarro and a number of smaller operations which have included:
- A high-level process design review;
- Plant capacity assessment together with a mechanical review, including costs for refurbishing parts of the plants;
- Review of ancillary equipment (thickeners, conveyors, ROM coal crushing, storage and product coal handling/load-out, as well as coal slimes treatment and handling), of particular importance as this part of the plant normally costs more than the core module.
As a result, we are familiar with custom built plants, modular plants and mixed design plants.
Modification and Reuse of Plants
A notable modification undertaken by Enviroplus` Alan Percival was the building of a low gravity wash to produce high-grade coking coal at Wankie Colliery. This involved the innovative re-use of a sizing screen to include de-sliming the small coal fraction and rebuilding a DWP plant as a two-stage pump fed cyclone plant to handle 250% of the existing feed tonnage. All existing pumps were reused for different duties.
At Middelkraal colliery, a relocated 120 tph drum plant was rebuilt for a new project to partially wash 300 000 tons per month of low-grade power station coal. This plant has subsequently achieved 500 000 tons per month.
